waco car show

several years ago, sixteen or so i guess, i was headed to waco in my forty-one ford pickup for the annual lone-star rod run… heath ,who was three or so at the time, loved that old truck and thought he had to go every where i went… so i loaded him up with a change of clothes, and headed out..

he never complained if it was a hundred degrees, or raining straight down.. it was an adventure for him..just riding along on interstate 35 enjoying the day..for hours on end..in that old truck..

the car-show was at fort fisher state park on the brazos, down town waco.. we’d sleep in a tent or on the bed of that ol’truck.. fighting mesquitoes and overwhelming humidity.. we’d live on a diet of chili dogs and root-beer for three days, just tickled to be there..

the texas rangers have a museum there in the park, which would serve to entertain taylor while the adults all sat around under the trees drinking long necks and telling car stories.. the park consisted of about ten acres, completely covered with antique cars and spectators…

some vendor had an enclosed trailor that was supposed to contain the actual 34 ford that bonnie and clyde were killed in.. taylor spent about twenty dollars of mine, two dollars at a time , looking at that bullett riddled wreck, again and again… i finally had to draw the line despite his whining for one more tour…

after a couple of days existing on chili dogs and nachoes, taylor reported to me that he needed to go to the rest room.. so i did the parently thing and told him to go ahead to the facility by himself…

some time passed, and i soon forgot to check on heath… there came a page over the p.a. system… poppa carter , report to the park ranger’s booth… i went to investigate.. the ranger told me i was needed in the men’s restroom…

ohmy gosh! taylor was surely in the midst of some sort of crisis… i hot-footed it over to the park jonnie, and found taylor crying there in the back stall… seems those chili cheese dogs had an adverse effect on his unseasoned bowels… the stall was covered, his clothes and even his new tennis shoes were unsalvagable..he had however, managed to keep from soiling the ceiling fan..

i stripped him off as gingerly as possible, and stuck him in the shower stall. while he was washing up i took his clothes and shoes outside to a nearby dumpster and left them as bait for any stray varment that happened along the river bank…i then returned to camp and retreived some clean clothes before returning to the shower stall.

when i arrived there he was ,naked as the day he was born, but no worse for wares.. squeeky clean and soaking wet.. i dried him off and helped him get into his new out fit.. where’s my new shoes he asked, he didn’t like the answer i gave him… started crying again, this time at the top of his lungs.. he refused to be consoled til i said i would retreive them from the dumpster…

i found a long stick and raked them out.. washed them off with a garden hose.. and put them back on his feet.. . all  was well, he headed back to camp as though nothing had ever happened.. after all, we were best buddies, and i had just rescued him, and his new tennis shoes, from a sticky situation…

chances are, he don’t even remember that day.. but i certainly do.. we came through a major crisis together and emerged victorious, minus one pair of sox and a short-legged pair of jeans…

now he’s grown and i’m getting old, maybe he can rescue me from a similar situation some sweet day….

iowa park’s hometown boy is making his first pitching appearance to day for the new york yankees.. he’s been in their farm club for six years, since being drafted out of high school…

he was a senior when taylor was a freshman.. iowa park was in our district at that time, but heath had not yet clinched his position as a starter.. taylor never actually pitched against wright, but was a member of the team that faced him..

i can only imagine how proud his family must surely be for him..  today is a day he’s waited for since he was big enough to dream.. how great is it, to live in a country where a small town boy can chase( no pun intended) his dreams all the way to the mound for the yankees..

game time is 12:00 on espn, check him out… root for him even if you hate the yankees, he’s a local boy that has finally arrived…he deserves our support on what is surely the biggest day of his young life… go get’em chase wright…. make us all proud !!

got a full report from chipper this morning on their recent trip to florida…they visited the family of one of chipper’s old army buddies that was killed in vietnam back in the sixties.. visited his grave-site, chipper left his 101st  airborne cap there at the grave.. he was able to answer some of the questions the family had concerning the events that led to his death.. forty years after the fact..

on a lighter note, they attended some nude beach for senior citizens.. he said they looked like they had stayed in the water too long, kinda wrinkled in all the wrong places…

their search for a place to swim with the dolphins was fruitless.. so on the return trip they swung thru louisianna and found a slew where they could swim with the gators instead… at first chipper found the dead chickens hanging from low limbs over the water, a bit intimidating… only later did he discover that he was swimming in some cajun’s gator trap..when the disgruntled trapper appeared and evicted them for disturbing his hunting grounds…

chipper told all this for the truth, and i certainly have no cause to doubt him,   as he has never lied to me in the fifty plus years i’ve known him.. he’s never once embelished the truth, except that one time elmo reed was quizzing him about why he was hanging around his daughter’s bedroom window… ray crossed his fingers and told elmo he was looking his baseball.   i guess elmo bought it, cause chippers still listed among the living….

big o’s sea-food

this photo was taken by mary during their recent world travels thru georgia and florida… big-o has his finger in yet another enterprize– sellin crab-claws in a smoke free invironment… he’s always on the cutting edge, operating  lonita’s empire while doing all in his power to humiliate the nicotine addicts in a public forum…

couldn’t help but notice there is no sign banning drunks or red-necks,cow-traders or bull haulers….nothing said about lawyers or politicians… just can’t tolerate those weed-burnin cancer-stick smokers…

guess i’ll just eat my crab-claws in the parking lot…. what about a refill on my tea glass, and maybe some red sauce, just sit it there on the hood…

doctor’s visit

spent the day yesterday sitting in the cardiologists waiting room in sherman… reading unlimited amounts of people magazine..

carolyn was doing the annual checkup, all went well except her cholesterol count, it was the same as my credit score.. we celebrated the good report with a trip to ihop where i had the senior sampler and a deck of flap-jacks covered with some of that strawberry syrup like eddie ordered from hustler magazine…

i learned a lot about oprah and britney, even saw the results of katie couric’s colon exam right there in the tabloid, in the doctors office… what happened to the right to privacy? i’ll never be able to watch katie read the evening news again..without having a flashback.tramatic experience to say the least,  i’ll be watchin peter jennings from here on out…

the good doctor said carolyn had the heart of an athlete, guess that’s the result of attending ball-games a minimum of three days a week.. i thought she was just wasting money, going to all those games… turns out she was just investing in her health..

speaking of ball games, we’ll be going to austin on saturday to watch taylor and his o.u. team-mates take on the longhorns… it’s a long trip and will cost a few bucks, but what price can you put on carolyn’s health ?? warning: there could be more braggin on monday…..

went by little danny’s dance hall on sunday, just to check progress.. there is a big wedding dance scheduled to take place there in the near future.. looks like it will be sand-dune dancing to me… he’ll need adequate lighting for the dancers to avoid all the exposed plumbing drains scattered around thru the sand dunes as well.

sand volleyball caught on pretty good, perhaps this sand-dancing will too!. stepping on your partners bare feet would be far less painful in a sand pile.. and spilled beer would not pose a problem.. i can already see where this may be the next big craze..

all this fuss over immigrant laborers has reduced danny’s work force to a party of one.. don’t know if he can hand trowel  enough concrete to dance on before the dead-line or just turn guests loose on the sand dunes and plumbing fixtures…

while driving home yesterday in a rainstorm, the wipers on my hot-water six were doing more streaking than wiping..i was straining to see the road… as i passed the jones estate, i noticed a sign near the road…. i’m almost sure it said ponderosa… has he finally named his ranch ??

perhaps he watched too many episodes of bonanza growing up, or the pressure being applied by his neighbors with the big gate has forced him to make some sort of public statement…  i think the ponderosa on t.v. was a cattle operation, i’ve not seen the first yearling on jones’ place.. theyre just too messy, leaving those piles all over his pasture…. he won’t have it…

it had quit raining as i passed back by this morning, but it was too dark to see… he doesn’t  yet have any lights on the sign… but i am confident he has indeed named the place—ponderosa…   the sign is not so large as to be guady so look close next time you pass… jones has apparantly got that septic tank problem fixed and is now working on his entrance again….

as i traveled along the rural black-top yesterday morning ,on the way to bible class, i couldn’t help but notice the red-buds and wild-plums in full bloom along the creek banks.. bar ditches sprinkled with indian paintbrushes and blue-bonnets, pasture lands green with new growth…

my thoughts turned to the Bible verse;  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures,  He leadeth me beside the still waters, He restoreth my soul…

how fortunate i really am to live in rural north-texas where i can experience the beauty of God’s creation first hand..  don’t have to rely on (texas  highways magazine) to see how beautiful rural highways are in the springtime.   just look around,  some folks think all this beauty came from some mutation or evolution of a single-cell something, several million years ago…. i don’t think so..pretty awesome to be the result of happen-stance.
