the new york times and the hollywood movie industry have preconceived notion that all rednecks are broke and uneducated… actually a redneck can be a bank executive, stock-broker, or any other profession for that matter…
being a redneck has nothing to do what profession you have chosen… it’s a state of mind.. a living environment.. a set of morals… and even a dinner menu..
a guy driving a pick-up with a gun-rack behind the seat and a Bible on the dash is not a hippocrit, he’s just making a statement… don’t mess with what belongs to me cause i’m trying to do what’s right..
besides, who’s to say that blackeyed peas and cornbread or boiled cabbage and hamhock are only fit for peasants ? personally i think that is some mighty fine vitals..
you’d be hard pressed to find a gay-bar or abortion clinic in montague county..but you will find a lot of veterans organizations and ladies auxilary’s.. a lot of churches full of families.. we still take pride in being an american..and the sacrifices that our fore-fathers made for our sake..
if you choose to call me a redneck, i’ll wear it like a badge of honor..that’s exactly what i am.. i do like to see a broodmare and her foal grazing peacefully in a coastal patch, or a hard working farmer plowing in his wheat feild….. i do like traditions like little league, rodeos and a downtown parade….i am proud of my heritage.. my grand mother was goldman lela montague… guess that’s how i came to be here and how i have grown to love this place and the genuine people that dwell here..we do beleive that dogs like to ride in pickup trucks and chase armadillos..that neighbors are our equals and deserve respect…
we don’t hate yankees… lot’s of good things are in new york, like the statue of liberty and yankee baseball.
i think it’s time all good southerners came to the realization that it’s a good thing when someone calls you a redneck, shake his hand, invite him over for some ham-hock and boiled cabbage then tell him how your daddy fought in world war two..
Sometimes it is hard living in the city with people that dont care about you or anybody else sometime not even themselves, but I can move up the ladder just as fast or faster by using the morals and respect that my redneck up bringing gave me. I will proudly wear that badge along beside my father.
